What’s New in DXMOS v5.1: Expanded Optical Diagnostics, Enhanced Layer 1 Resiliency, and Faster SSH

The latest update to the XKL operating system, DXMOS v5.1, is now available. This minor release focuses on optimizing the day-to-day administrative experience, hardening management plane security, and expanding physical-layer diagnostic capabilities across our SpectraPath Illuminator, DAT100, and SpectraPath Provisioner architectures.

Because v5.1 is a minor release, it is focused heavily on stability, performance optimizations, and delivering features requested directly by operators running active production networks.

Management Plane & Security Enhancements

These updates apply universally to all XKL platforms and are designed to improve daily administrative workflows and compliance standards.

  • Optimized SSH Performance: Administrative command-line interactions are now significantly faster. Internal optimizations to DXMOS over Secure Shell (SSH) double the median response speed, slashing session latency and providing a much tighter, more responsive CLI experience during routine maintenance.

  • Hardened AAA Capabilities: Updates to Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA) deliver stronger access control, tighter security posture, and smoother integration into existing enterprise directory and identity management environments.

 

Layer 1 Diagnostics & Channel Flexibility

Derived from real-world requirements from major research institutions, transit authorities, and regional internet exchanges, these diagnostic features give operators deeper visibility into optical link health without requiring external hardware.

  • Host-Side BERT for CMIS Devices: Operators can now execute host-side Bit Error Rate Testing (BERT) on supported Common Management Interface Specification (CMIS) optical devices. This allows for native, continuous link integrity validation directly from the XKL platform.

  • Unrestricted Channel Allocation (DQM400): System configuration for the DQM400 platform has been generalized. Operators are no longer constrained by rigid starting channel numbers and can tune and utilize any channel natively out of the box.

  • Physical Coding Sublayer (PCS) Alarm Reporting: To reduce Mean Time to Repair (MTTR), DXMOS now integrates native PCS alarm reporting. For optical modules supporting these hardware alarms, operators will receive instant notification of data-plane integrity issues before they scale into unexpected downtime.

 

Expanded Hardware Layer Resiliency

DXMOS v5.1 deepens the software integration with XKL’s physical layer components to automate path protection and expand topology options.

  • Dynamic Path Protection (DFS Systems): For distributed optical transport networks, DXMOS provides dynamic DWDM channel protection via the Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS).

  • New X-Line Configuration: This release implements the new X-Line Configuration topology for Provisioner systems, giving network architects greater design flexibility when engineering redundant, high-availability optical paths.

  • Native Component Support: This release bakes in full native software management for Integrated Optical Channel Monitor (OCM) components within the SpectraPath Illuminator, as well as integrated Optical Protection Switch (OPS) hardware components inside the DAT100 architecture.
