Expanding Optical Transport: Introducing the DarkStar® MediaLight™ Xponder and Muxponder Powered by DXMOS v5.2
XKL is expanding its optical networking portfolio with the release of the MediaLight™ series which launches with the DarkStar® MediaLight™ Xponder and the DarkStar® MediaLight™ Muxponder. Concurrently, we are releasing DXMOS v5.2, the dedicated operating system layer engineered to bring native, seamless management to the new MediaLight™ products.
As network operators face higher lead times, more vendor lock-in, and increasingly constrained rack space, the DarkStar MediaLight series delivers greater flexibility and faster deployment while reinforcing XKL’s core principles of high reliability and easier operations.
Unified Management: Zero Learning Curve for Operators
The release of DXMOS v5.2 ensures that the MediaLight Xponder and Muxponder integrate into existing XKL environments with operational parity.
- Identical CLI & Workflow: DXMOS v5.2 brings the same familiar command-line interface, syntax structure, and system logic to the MediaLight series. Network engineers can configure, monitor, and provision MediaLight systems immediately using their existing operational knowledge.
- Consistent Management & Telemetry: Full integration into XKL’s management plane guarantees that automated monitoring, SNMP/telemetry polling, and AAA security protocols behave identically to existing DMD-A, DAT100, and DFS deployments.
- Plug-and-Play Network Automation: Because DXMOS v5.2 maintains OS continuity, existing automation scripts and orchestration tools will interface with the MediaLight series without requiring custom development or unique API wrappers.
Designed for Modern High-Density Transport
The DarkStar MediaLight Xponder and Muxponder are built to give network architects targeted flexibility at the physical layer:
- DarkStar MediaLight Xponder: Optimized for flexibility across transponding, media conversion, and Alien Wave while offering maximum throughput with minimal power consumption and physical-layer security.
- DarkStar MediaLight Muxponder: Engineered for efficient aggregation and point-to-point applications, allowing operators to multiplex diverse client services into high-speed optical lines without introducing protocol-level latency.
DXMOS v5.2 Platform Enhancements & Interoperability
In addition to hardware enablement for the MediaLight™ series, DXMOS v5.2 introduces targeted enhancements to spectral monitoring, authentication resiliency, and Layer 1 diagnostics:
- Expanded OCM Waveplan Monitoring (Channel-61 / 200GHz): Optical Channel Monitor (OCM) waveplans now support Channel-61 with 200GHz bandwidth. This enables wider spectral allocation within OCM waveplans, providing enhanced monitoring capabilities for high-capacity configurations and improving initial planning setups for deployments requiring broader channel spacing.
- Resilient RADIUS Authentication Handling: The RADIUS client has been upgraded to handle unexpected or vendor-specific attributes more gracefully. Rather than discarding the entire attribute set upon encountering an unknown field, the client now skips only the unrecognized attribute and processes remaining attributes normally. This prevents unnecessary authentication disruptions and improves interoperability with third-party servers.
- Stable BERT Synchronization for Cisco-Acacia OSFP Modules: Resolved a receive-sync (Rx sync) issue affecting Bit Error Rate Testing (BERT) when interfacing with Cisco-Acacia OSFP modules running firmware version 61.30. Systems utilizing this firmware now maintain stable synchronization during BERT runs, eliminating intermittent test failures and ensuring reliable link-integrity validation.
The DXMOS v5.2 release also includes minor bug fixes.
